What is periodontal disease?
Also known as gum disease, periodontal disease is a condition caused by bacteria in plaque or tartar. To prevent the negative effects of gum disease, our friendly team at Wright Smile Center of Woodbridge recommends an appointment at least once every six months for a dental cleaning. This cleaning will remove the plaque and tartar that can’t be removed by brushing and flossing alone. If left untreated, periodontal disease can lead to swollen, red or tender gums or gums that pull away from your teeth. In extreme cases, gum disease can lead to the loss of tissue, bone or teeth. Depending on your unique circumstances, Dr. Rita D. Wright may suggest one of many treatments ranging from an improved oral hygiene regimen to surgery in extreme cases.
